There are lots of family-friendly Halloween movies you can watch with your kids. The following movies are perfect for Halloween. When you want them to enjoy the holiday but not get frightened.
These movies have ghosts, witches, jack-o-lanterns, and trick or treating. All the traditions Halloween has to offer without the terror. You won’t have to worry about your little ones having nightmares after watching these movies.
I’m a product of the ’80s and ’90s and loved watching these movies when I was a kid and still love watching them now. Maybe some of these movies were your favorite too.

Ernest Scared Stupid
On Halloween Eve Ernest accidentally unleashes an evil troll. Who has been stuck under a tree for 200 years. The troll begins terrorizing the town by turning the kids into wooden dolls. Ernest teams up with some young friends to take down the troll. Will Ernest be able to outsmart this evil troll and save the town?
ET
ET is a loveable alien, learning the ways of humans while stranded on earth. He becomes addicted to Reese’s Pieces. And gets to experience what it’s like to go trick or treating. Dressing up as a ghost for Halloween. Why he doesn’t go as an alien, I have no idea.
Nightmare Before Christmas
“This is Halloween, this is Halloween, Halloween, Halloween.” This song gets suck in my head every October! The Nightmare Before Christmas is my kids favorite Halloween movie. They love watching Jack Skellington go through his mid-life crisis. While he looks for more out of life than making Halloween scary. This movie is a little dark but shouldn’t be too scary for younger kids.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Disney puts a family-friendly twist on the classic tale of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Icabod Crane is new to town and quickly falls in love with the town beauty. But he also learns about the local legend of the headless horseman. Can he make it through the night with is head still attached?
Spaced Invaders
Spaced Invaders is a lesser know Halloween movie but it was one of my favorites when I was a kid. These Aliens decide to invade Earth but they didn’t check the calendar to see what day it was, Halloween. Instead of terrifying a small mid-western town they are mistaken for trick or treaters. And their plans for invasion get foiled by a group Earth kids.
The Addams Family
“They’re creepy and they’re kooky
Mysterious and spooky
They’re all together ooky
The Addams family.” The Addams Family theme song explains why this movie needs to be on your Halloween movie list. Though they are spooky and ooky they are family-friend and shouldn’t cause nightmares.
Casper
Kat and her Dad, who is a “Ghost Therapist” travel around the country in search of ghosts who need help passing on to the afterlife. They move into a haunted mansion in the town of Salem where Kat meets the lovable Casper. Casper and Kat help each other find what they are searching for. While fending off and evil heiress and The Ghostly Trio.
Double Double Toil and Trouble
Double Double Toil and Trouble feature the Olsen twins. Those of us that grew up in the ’90s know well. The twins have to trick an evil witch into lifting a curse on a beloved family member. While at the same time saving their family home.
Halloween Town
A young girl and her siblings visit their Grandmother in Halloweentown. The residents of Halloween town are witches, goblins, and vampires. The oldest soon finds out that she is a witch and comes from a family of witches. Then she, her mom, and Grandmother get pulled into a fight against an evil that is trying to take over the world.
Hocus Pocus
Hocus Pocus is fun to watch, not too scary, and family-friendly. The movie features three sisters who are witches and live in Salem. They come back centuries after their death when they get resurrected. Then begin running amuck in the small town of Salem. An immortal black cat helps the young characters get rid of the witches for good. While saving everyone in town in the process.
Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie
Pooh’s Heffalump Movie is great for the younger kids. This takes place in the Hundred Acre Wood. Where it is Halloween and Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, and the rest of the gang go on their regular adventures. This is a perfect Halloween movie to watch with younger children.
It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown isn’t a movie but worth adding to your Halloween watch list. It features Charlie Brown and friends. They are getting ready to go trick-or-treating. While Linus spends the night in the pumpkin patch, because of a story about “The Great Pumpkin”.
Starting a Halloween Movie Tradition
My kids are still young and they are not quite yet ready for Freddy Kruger or Jason. And horror movies are not exactly my favorite genre.
These are my favorite Halloween movies when I was growing up. And I hope these movies will become my kids’ favorites too.
