It’s October and Halloween is right around the corner. Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays and now that I’m a mom I get to do all the fun family Halloween activities again, like trick or treating! This year I thought it would be fun to create a list to help my family countdown to Halloween.
Fun Family Halloween Activities
Decorate your home
It wouldn’t be Halloween if your home is decorated with spiders, spider webs, pumpkins, and bats. Visit the Dollar store, Spirit Halloween store or DIY your decorations.
Make a Halloween Craft
Making crafts are always fun especially when it’s holiday-themed. You can go to Pinterest to get some inspiration for a DIY Halloween craft or visit a craft store like Michaels or JoAnn’s. The Dollar store is another good place to find crafts to make.
Make or Buy Halloween costumes
Going shopping for the right costume is always exciting but making your own can be fun too.
Go to a Pumpkin Patch
We visit the same pumpkin patch every year. We pick pumpkins, ride the cow train and eat delicious treats. When the kids are a little older we will attempt the corn maze. Right now we would end up carrying them before we ever made it to the end!
Make Clementine Pumpkins
Clementine Pumpkins are such an easy and simple idea. We always stock up on Clementines this time of year. Since it’s orange why not decorate them like jack o’ lanterns.
Make Goulish Slime
Slime is really fun to make and it’s easy too. You only need a few ingredients and your good to go. Try this homemade slime recipe.
Trash Bag Spider Webs
This is an easy DIY Halloween decoration for your kids to do. It’s similar to making snowflakes except your using a plastic garbage bag. Here’s an easy step by step tutorial to make Easy DIY Trash Bag Spiderwebs.
Bake Halloween Cookies
Break out the Halloween Cookie cutters and decorate these easy to make sugar cookies.
Read Halloween Stories
Some of our favorites are Arthur’s Halloween and Scaredy Squirrel Prepares for Halloween
Turn out the lights and Tell Halloween Stories
Grab a flashlight. Turn out the lights and take turns telling spooky Halloween stories.
Paint Pumpkins
For those who can’t wait to carve their pumpkins try painting your pumpkin.
Drink a Spooky Drink
Jack O’Lantern floats are delicious and easy to make. Not exactly a spooky drink but fun for Halloween.
Eat Eyeballs (peeled grapes)
It’s not easy pealing grapes but it makes for a creepy healthy treat.
Make a Halloween playlist
Make sure to add Thriller and Monster Mash to your playlist. Otherwise, it’s not a Halloween playlist!
Go to a Haunted House
I have found a few “Haunted Houses” in my area that are kid-friendly. Requirements for my kids are nothing that jumps out and no gore.
Go to a Halloween Event
Attend a Halloween event in your city. Check out the local libraries and schools for special Halloween events.
Make a Gingerbread Haunted House
You don’t have to wait until Christmas to make a Gingerbread House. We like picking up a Haunted House cookie kit from Trader Joe’s.

Halloween themed Scavenger Hunt
Create a list of Halloween decorations. For example:
- ghosts
- tombstone
- pumpkins
- spider webs
Take a walk through your neighborhood and do a scavenger hunt with the kids. The first one to find everything on the list wins.
Make Mummy Wrapped Hot Dogs
These are made with two of my Kid’s favorite foods, hot dogs and crescent rolls. You can check out how to make the Mummies here.
Make Caramel Apples
Who doesn’t like caramel apples? Instead of dipping the apple whole, I like to cut up the apple into slices then dip the slices. It”s a lot easier to eat and a lot less messy!
Buy Dry ice and make a DIY fog machine
Put dry ice in a bowl and pour water over it to create an instant fog machine.
Have a Halloween Movie Marathon
We watch It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown and Hocus Pocus every year. Here is a Top 10 Family Halloween Movie List for more movies to watch.
Carve Pumpkins
Make sure to get a pumpkin carving kit. The kits make carving, cleaning and designing so much easier!
Roast Pumpkin Seeds
Don’t forget to clean and roast your pumpkin seeds. They make a delicious non-sugary treat.
Trick or Treat!
Try not to eat all the candy in one night!
It always seems like the holidays pass by too quickly. So maybe if we make an effort to celebrate Halloween every day it will make it last a little longer. Happy Halloween!

My wife and I are hoping to plan a Halloween block party this year for all of our neighbors. It was great to read that you can put some dry ice in a bowl and pour water over it to create a fog machine. If we do decide to host the party, we’ll want to find a good reliable company that can deliver this to us.

A Halloween block party would be fun! I hope you’ll be able to find all the ice you need.
