What is a good stocking stuffer?
What makes a good stocking stuffer is something they want. And something practical they’ll use. But you don’t want to fill it with junk that will get thrown away or forgotten.
Have you heard of the 4 gift rule?
- Buy something they want
- You buy something they need
- Buy them something to wear
- You buy them something to read
You can apply the four gift rule to stockings as well. These rules are a good starting point for coming up with ideas to stuff your family’s stockings.
For something they want I will buy a small toy like a blind bag. My daughter loves watching unboxing videos on Youtube. She likes to collect blind bags such as Shopkins, LOL Dolls, and Pikmi Pops. So I will add one or two blind bags into her stocking. For something my son wants I will get him a small nerf gun and extra ammo or a few hot wheel cars.
For something they need I buy them a new spin toothbrush every year. They like getting new characters on the toothbrush. And using a spin toothbrush encourages them to brush their teeth longer.
Socks are a good idea for something to wear. I will buy them socks with characters they like. Or a pair of socks I wouldn’t spend the money on. Other ideas for something to wear could be a new winter hat or gloves.
My daughter is to the age where the bedtime books I read to her don’t have to have pictures on every page. So I will buy her a chapter book. Her favorites are Amelia Bedilia Chapter Books and Ramona books by Beverly Cleary.
My son is no longer ripping books so I don’t have to buy him board books anymore. He likes Dr. Seuss’s books or books about Dinosaurs. So I can stuff his stocking with some of these titles.
Where can I buy cheap stocking stuffers?
Target Dollar Bins
The dollar bins at Target are always a good place to find little things to stuff stockings with. Most items range in price from one dollar to five dollars. Last year I bought card games like memory and old maid. I also found some stickers and temporary tattoos.
Dollar Tree
Dollar tree is a good place to find stocking stuffers. But I wouldn’t buy little toys from there. Because in my experience, the toys break and rarely last a day.
But I would buy bath stuff like bath bombs or bath paint. Other things like slime, puzzles, and glow sticks are also good stocking stuffers to buy from the Dollar Tree.
Novelty Toy Aisle
I shop at Fred Meyer’s and they have a great novelty toy aisle that has a lot of cheap stocking stuffer ideas. Whoopy cushions, slime, recorders, squishy toys, and little dinosaurs are some of the items you can find. I don’t go to Walmart too often but check there for novelty toys.
Claires
Claires is a great place to get things like hair accessories for the girls in your life. They have tons of cute hair bands and hair clips to choose from. Also, they seem to always have a sale. Like, buy three items get three items free type sales so watch out of those savings.
How much should you spend on stocking stuffers?
Field Agent surveyed 333 parents with children living at home. To ask how much they plan on spending on stocking stuffers. They found that 51% were planning on spending $10-$25 on stockings.
The amount you spend will depend on how much you spent on the rest of your family’s gifts.
Hanging the Stockings With Care
Thinking of what to put in your family’s stockings isn’t always easy. You may not want to get junk that will end up in the trash or candy that’s not good for them.
Small inexpensive items are the best things to fill your family’s stocking. Also getting items that are practical and stuff they’ll use is the best idea. You don’t have to go all out. Spending under 20 bucks is all you need.
I hope you found these family stocking stuffer ideas helpful. What items do you like to fill your family’s stockings with? Let me know in the comments:)
