DIY Mini Dreamcatcher
This DIY mini dreamcatcher craft was inspired from a kit my daughter got this past Valentine’s day. The kit was unicorn-themed so of course, she had to have it! It is an adorable decoration and I thought it would be a fun project for us to make our own.
What are dreamcatchers?
Dreamcatchers are from the Native American culture. It’s believed that dreamcatchers catch nightmares and bad dreams.
This mini dream catcher is only a craft. But it’s good to let your little ones know what they’re making. And a little bit of the history behind it.
According to Dreamcatcher.com:
“Dream Catchers are a spiritual tool used to help assure good dreams to those that sleep under them. A dream catcher is usually placed over a place you would sleep where the morning light can hit it. As you sleep all dreams from the spirit world have to pass through the dream catcher. Only good dreams can pass through to the dreamer while the bad dreams are caught in the webbing and are destroyed by the first rays of the morning light.”
Materials You’ll Need
- A mason jar ring
- Embroidering floss
- Yarn
- Ribbons
- Feathers
- Beads
You’ll most likely have most of these materials for the DIY mini dreamcatcher. I was able to find yarn, feathers, and beads at the Dollar Tree. And I already had a bunch of mason jar rings laying around.
So I thought the rings would be perfect to use for this craft. Of course, anything circular with a hole inside the circle can work.
The ribbons, beads, and feathers are to decorate the bottom of the DIY mini dreamcatcher. This is where your little ones can get creative. They can decide how to decorate their mini dream catcher however they want.
How to Make a Mini Dream Catcher
Step 1:
To begin, tie the end of the yarn to the mason jar ring. Then, you will be wrapping the yarn all the way around the ring. You can wrap the ring with 1 color of yarn. Or use several colors to wrap around the ring. It’s easier to cut long pieces of yarn. Rather than keeping the yarn attached to the skein or ball of yarn.
If you choose to use more than 1 color, tie the two pieces together and continue wrapping around the ring. Then, you can hide the knots under the ring. Or wrap over the knots to hide them.
Once you have wrapped all the yarn around the ring tie a knot. To prevent the yarn from unraveling. Also, you can use a glue gun to secure the end of the yarn.
Step 2:
Next, you will make the web. Begin by wrapping pieces of yarn across the ring. Think of a spider web. You can use different colors to make the web. Cut shorter pieces of string and tie each end to a side of the ring. You can place a bead on the string if you would like.
Step 3:
When you’re done with the web you will decorate the bottom of the dreamcatcher. You can use ribbons, cloth, or more yarn to decorate the bottom of the dreamcatcher.
Tie string to the bottom of the feather. If you would like to use feathers to decorate with. Then wrap some of the string around the feather several times to secure it. Next, tie it onto the mason jar ring. I used the embroidery string because it’s easier to wrap around the feathers.
Also, you can put beads on the yarn or ribbon to decorate the bottom of the dreamcatcher. Then tie the ribbon to the mason jar ring so that it hangs.
Finally, tie some string to the top. So your little ones can hang their creation on the wall.
The Last Thing You Need To Know About DIY Mini Dreamcatchers
This is a fun craft for your kids to make. You only need simple supplies that you most likely already have. I have a drawer full of mason jar rings so I thought it would be fun to use them for a craft. Also, a mason jar ring is sturdy and something kids can’t break!
Another good thing about this craft is you can substitute for supplies that you don’t have. For example, if you don’t have yarn you could use washi tape to wrap around the mason jar ring. Or you could paint the ring. And if you don’t have beads you could thread embroidery string through pom-poms.
I hope you enjoyed this DIY mini dreamcatcher craft! Have you ever owned or made a dreamcatcher before? Let me know in the comments:)
