Making your own homemade cleaning products have several benefits. They are easy to make, cheaper, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly.
Before I became a mom I didn’t worry about what type of cleaners I used. I never thought about what was being absorbed into my body when wiping down a counter with a store-bought cleaner. Or what chemicals I was breathing in when I was spraying the cleaner.
However, when I was pregnant with my first child I started to worry about what I was inhaling and what my body was absorbing when I was cleaning my home. I didn’t want to harm the little life growing inside me.
So I began making homemade cleaners and learned of the many benefits.
Why Make Homemade Cleaning Products?
Cheaper
When first buying the ingredients you need to make your cleaners it might seem expensive. But only a small amount of those ingredients are used each time you make your homemade cleaners. So you’ll be able to make many batches of the cleaners. The more expensive items I purchased have lasted years and I’m still using these.
Cleaners you buy from the store will last a short time and then you have to repurchase these products again. So the cost may seem expensive at first but in the long
Non-Toxic
If you read the back of a cleaner you purchased at the store you’ll find many ingredients listed. Making your own cleaners only requires a few natural ingredients. You’ll know exactly what you are spraying on your counters.
Environmentally Friendly
You’ll be able to use these basic ingredients many times. So you’ll have less waste to throw away. Whenever you run out of a cleaner you can just refill the spray bottle you already have. You won’t be throwing away a plastic bottle every time you run out of your cleaner. So there won’t be a need to purchase another bottle, creating less waste.
Also toxic chemicals will not be going down the drain into the environment when you are cleaning with your natural homemade cleaning products.
Easy to Make
The ingredients to make your homemade cleaning products are easy to find. Most grocery stores should have everything you need. Also, you most likely have most of the ingredients already in your pantry. Once you have the basic ingredients all you have to do is follow a recipe.
Basic ingredients you’ll need are:
- Baking Soda
- Washing Soda
- Borax
- Hydrogen Peroxide
- White Vinegar
- Castille Soap
- Empty Spray Bottles
Homemade Cleaning Product Recipes
All-Purpose Cleaner
- 1/2 teaspoon soap
- 2 tablespoon Borax
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 cups hot water
Mix all of the ingredients together and pour into a empty spray bottle.
I have used this recipe for many years and I love it! It’s simple to make with easy to find ingredients. I use it to clean in the kitchen and the bathroom.
I even use it to spot clean the carpet when my little ones spill something.
To make it more convenient, try making triple the recipe and store it in
Floor Cleaner
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 1T liquid dish soap
- 1 cup washing soda
- 2 gallons warm tap water
Mix all the ingredients in a bucket. Mop the floors with the cleaner. Then mop up the cleaner with fresh water.
Tub and Sink Cleaner
- baking soda
- liquid soap
Shake some baking soda in the tub or sink then add a few drops liquid soap. Then scrub all over with a brush. Rinse with water when you’re done scrubbing.
Shower Cleaner
- liquid soap
- vinegar
To clean the shower use a brush with a dispenser attached. Add the soap and vinegar to the dispenser and start scrubbing the grime away. Also, you can save time by cleaning the shower walls when you take a shower. There won’t be any noxious smells for you to breathe in.
Glass Cleaner
- 1/2 cup vinegar
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon dish soap
Mix all ingredients in a spray bottle.
The vinegar smell may be strong but it will go away once the solution is dry.
Homemade cleaning products are easy to make. If you can follow a recipe you can make your own. Instead of spending three dollars or more on an all-purpose cleaner you can make one for a few cents.
I have been making my own homemade cleaning products for many years now and am happy with the results. I like knowing exactly what ingredients I am spraying on my countertops and floors. I’m not worried about toxic chemicals that my family or myself are breathing in or absorbing.

I love the fact that you know what’s in the cleaners. Like you, I didn’t really think anything of it until I became a mom. Now, my husband and I have become very conscious of these things.
