Homemade Bubble Mixture

It’s already the middle of summer and it’s challenging keeping my kids entertained. But something as simple as blowing bubbles can keep them busy for a while. Especially when we make our own homemade bubble mixture and wands.

Bubbles are cheap to buy at the store but the bubbles don’t seem to be very strong. They pop easily and don’t last long enough for my kids to chase after them.

Homemade bubbles are so much better. Also, making your own bubble mixture is fun for your kids. Both to make and to play with.

Homemade bubbles are so much better. Also, making your own bubble mixture is fun for your kids. Both to make and to play with.

Why should you make your own solution?

The best part of homemade bubbles is that they are a lot stronger than the kind you buy in the store. The glycerine helps soap bubbles hold water which keeps them from popping easily.

Making your own bubbles is also a science experiment for your kids. They have to add the right amount of each ingredient to create something new.

Bubble Mixture Recipe

Homemade bubble mixture ingredients

To make your bubble solution you will need

  • 4 cups Water
  • 1/2 cup  Dish soap
  • 2 tablespoons Glycerin

Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl.

What is Glycerin

Glycerin is not an everyday product most people keep around the house. If you’re not familiar with it glycerine is a clear liquid made from soybean, coconut, or palm oil. It’s odorless and has a syrup-like consistency. It’s often used when making soaps, cosmetics, and lotion.

I have a lot of glycerin from when my babies where young. I didn’t want to use soaps and shampoo full of chemicals so I made my own.

You can find a bottle of it on Amazon for under ten bucks. It’s a little spendy. But you only need to use a little bit of it. So you can make a lot of bubble solutions for many summers to come! You should be able to find it at a health food store like Whole Foods.

Glycerine Substitute

If you prefer to use something your more likely to find at a store you can substitute the glycerin for corn syrup. I haven’t tried it but I have read that corn syrup is a good substitute for glycerine if you don’t have it. They have the same syrup-like consistency.

Make your wands

DIY bubble wands

Now that you have your homemade bubble solution you need a way to blow the bubbles. You can get creative and use things you have around the house.

Pipe Cleaners

If you have pipe cleaner those are the easiest to make wands with. You can form the pipe cleaners into different shapes. Such as a heart, a circle, and a square.

For more of a science experiment ask your kids if the bubbles will form those shapes. Does the heart shape wand make a heart-shaped bubble? Challenge them to find out why the bubble isn’t shaped like a heart.

Straws and String

String and straws work well too. The bigger the wand the bigger bubbles you can make. Get two straws and some string. Thread the string through the straws and tie the ends together. You can use as much string as you want. But the more string you use the harder it is to manage. Especially for little hands.

You can pour your homemade bubble mixture into a cookie sheet or baking pan. So your little ones can dip the straw and string into the mixture.

Random Objects

You can also challenge them to find objects around the house. Let them find creative ways to make good wands to blow their bubbles. You could use the top of a mason jar lid. Or cut the bottom out of a plastic container. Let your kids use their detective skills to see what they can find.

Have a bubble blowing contest

You can turn blowing bubbles into a challenge. Ask them:

  • Who can blow the biggest bubble?
  • Whose bubble can last the longest?
  • Whose bubble can go the furthest?

If your lucky this challenge can keep them entertained for awhile.

The Last Thing You Need To Know About DIY Bubbles

Making homemade bubbles is a fun activity to do with your kids. You can always buy bubbles at the store. But making your own at home is a science project for your kids. And it’s not as messy as some experiments.

I hope you enjoyed this homemade bubble mixture post. Have you made your own bubbles? Let me know in the comments:)
